Steve's Trip to Eastern Turkey (We're Off)
We're Off

Well after much debate and checking of news and weather forecasts we are actually off.

The car has been hired and checked over for a long journey by Gordion car hire in Altinkum.   We decided for comfort we would hire a Fiat Doblo, also this has a large boot for gathering all the useless things we are sure to discover on route.  As the Mountain museum at Nufus should be closed the thought of bringing back one of the stone heads was ruled out.

All the necessary equipment has been bought, toilet rolls, sink stoppers, crisps & chewing gum and the route for the first few days has been definitely decided but it might change as we travel along as heh who knows what we will see.

The first target is the mountain range of Labranda to find where the bottled water, that most of us drink, comes from (later we shall try the Konya mountain range as well).  The main reason for this is that Peter buys this make of water and well, its almost on route, so why not.

After that, on day one, we shall be heading for Sandıklı where we hope to stay at one of the hot water spas, and get a rejuvenating soak before we travel on to Afyon where we shall stay and visit the city and buy some real Turkish Delight. we are told that this is the place for Turkish Delight as they make the real stuff here not the tourist muck as someone said to us.

After that its a slow journey down to Konya via the town of Çay which was the centre of a big earthquake in the 1990's, it will be interesting to see how the town has changed.

Of course we have set ourselves some targets throughout the journey. The first is to find the cheapest meal in Turkey. The second is to find the smelliest toilets, now we have set this target because we are sure that somewhere on route we are bound to find them. The last main target is to drink a glass of Çay in as many places as we can and get a picture of them all, blimey, that means we might have to stop in Kazıklı and maybe, actually stop and chat to those guys, who always seem to be there on those corners drinking Çay every time I drive to Bodrum.  (This is bound to lead as to the smelliest toilet challenge).

The first picture report will come later in the week and we shall try to get online as often as we can.

Don't forget to leave via email or in the guest book an address if you want a post card from Doğunbeyazit.
