Day 5

Leaving the car behind this morning and walking to the Open Air Museum at Goreme. This is a must for all to see.  Huge area of cave dwellings all of whıch were various churches from the 11th century and under the control of St. Basil. İt took some three hours to walk around the area and see all the various chapels and dwellings many of which had fantastic wall paintings of religious scenes as well as those of St. George killing the SNAKE along with St. Theodore (anyone heard of him) he was always in the same pictures as St. George both killing the SNAKE!

From here we got back in the car and traveled a short dıstance to KAYMAKLI to visit their underground city. 8 floors down, deep in the rock face, enough space to hold 20 to 30 thousand people, store rooms, wells, traps for defense, schools, kitchens all deep under ground. Its a back bending route down through tiny passages and a journey I was not sure I could make until I saw and old lady in the group in front and well that was that I had to do it. It was fantastic and another trip you all have to do.

From here we travelled around the area lookıng at the rock formations found all over Mostly they are formed by erosion and make strange shapes know as Faıry Chimneys Some of the best can be seen at ZELVE.
